There is a simple binary test. Either a car pollutes, or it does not. If it is tested and does not, why should it be off the streets?A car could have been used rarely, have done barely 15K km, be in pristine condition &amp; still be pushed off the streets of Delhi. I think the next logical measure should be not selling food to anyone over 75!

The Government collects an insane amount of tax through GST and Road Tax, including GST on insurance. All of this is based on the assumption that a vehicle can be used for 15 years, with renewal allowed every 5 years thereafter. But when @nitin\_gadkari unilaterally decides to ban diesel vehicles older than 10 years in Delhi, will he return one-third of the taxes collected? Many people have taken car loans to purchase these vehicles, and the interest paid over time is often equivalent to the GST itself. All of this will go in vain. It is a massive loss of value and wealth destruction.If the Government truly wants to curb pollution, it should conduct proper pollution checks and prove that a vehicle is indeed polluting. Most cars, even after 15 years, remain well within the prescribed emission norms. We are challenging the Government should carry out sampling of vehicles across different age groups, test their actual emissions, and publish the data to justify whether such a ban is necessary. What Gadkari and Modi are doing in Delhi is nothing but tremendous abuse of power. We urge people to protest this injustice. It is not just limited to Delhi, they'll push this policy in other states too.

Honestly, the government should instead enforce countrywide mandate for fitness checks of vehicles and make sure it's followed properly without any bribery and foul-play like in Japan (Which is highly unlikely because it's INDIA!!) and probably the government knows this, but they instead choose to simply ban the vehicles.

Don't buy cars then, use the metro. Plenty of cities around the world have anti-car policies. Because cars simply are horrible for any urban area.

Paris has blocked off half of its roads to cars. Tokyo levys huge tolls on every major road. NYC has congestion pricing. Singapore has a national limit on the number of cars that can exist. London has ULEV zones. The list goes on.

If you want to know why they have such policies, ask chatgpt.

It seems a bit harsh to stop servicing 15 year old vehicles, but something needs to be implemented to curb traffic and pollution. I'd be glad if we could have congestion pricing like NYC, and limit car-access (Paris) instead of this 15 year rule.

This is such a ridiculous rule. This effectively wipes out the second hand market for cars in Delhi, and puts most cars on the road in the bin. I genuinely wonder what the rationale is here. If the car passes emissions tests, what has age got to do with it. What is this push to bankrupt people?? we pay toll, road tax, tax on income, tax on spending, still get zilch in return. They can revise emission guidelines but that would actually take some work on their part so they aren't going to do that. 

They can't provide basic amenities, but come up with brainfarts like these. I seriously wonder whose pockets are being lined. If this isn't crony capitalism I don't know what is because someone is making big bucks from all this.

Not only this, The govt has given tender to many scrap dealers that they can pick up any car from the road that they find violating this rule. Which results in unnecessary burden to the owner, because despite rule, the scraper never informs the owner, later the parts of the car are sold in black market. All this also revealed in a sting operation by a prominent daily newspaper.

With this rule there is no point of maintaining a car in good condition. Even if you don’t maintain ur car regularly it will still run fine for 8-9 years at that point it will be time to sell it off due to this rule.
With this rule ur not actually owning a car but subscribing it for use and discard. This rule encourages to actually use and discard.

I didn't want to say this, but the govt should SERIOUSLY STOP with these blatant ways of extorting taxes from the already minority that is paying. 

We all know this govt is working more than previous ones (each party has its drawbacks, but I don't think we can deny this one is the better of the bunch) and they do need money to keep this over populated country going, but instead of ridiculously milking the minority taxpayers, why not focus on the majority that is evading for decades? Having a strict body like the IRS would actually generate more taxes than they are currently getting minus the slowly piling up anger and frustration from taxpayers.

Look there is really only one way to reduce automobile emissions enough to make a difference, it is to disincentivise the purchase and use of private vehicles.

However, for this to work, this has to be coupled with massive investment in public transport, one without the other will simply not work.

What singapore did was raise the taxes associated with purchasing and registering cars so high that people just cannot afford to buy cars and use the taxes collected from those who did buy cars to invest in public transport infrastructure.

It also increased the user base of public transport infrastructure making them much more financially feasible.

This can be seen as a good step within the context of, and only within the context of, a greater push for public transport system investment and adoption.

Rajesh may not be changing engine oil in time or changing airfilters and for coolant Rajesh might fill Bisleri cold water. For light bulbs Rajesh would install bright lights above the legal limit as the marker guy gave him a discount. For up keeping Rajesh washes his car and in worst cases panels from Delhi market.
